CMBPol Mission Concept Study Telecon Notes January 9, 11:00 AM CST Participants: Bock, Dodelson, Dunkley, Hanany, Hinshaw, Irwin, Kogut, Krauss, Lawrence, Meyer, Page, Ruhl, Seiffert, Shimon -- did I miss someone? 1. Telecon times discussion: Wednesday was the best day after the e-mail poll but there were more people who could go later. 12:15PM CST is suggested Krauss and Ruhl may need to leave early. I later heard from Lawrence that this time will not work. 2. Eric Smith is part of The Mission Concept proposal review process and so cannot comment. He states that the evaluation process is on schedule. My interpretation of this is that we will hear in February. 3. Workshop planning progress: A. Theory Meeting date the week of June 23. 3 or 4 days. At Fermilab. Dodelson, Dunkley and Zaldarriaga are planning the meeting. Will invite also Baumann and K. Smith. Topics: Inflation, Lensing, Reionization, Foreground, Foreground Science Additional suggested topic: Other probes of inflation - CIP, LISA, BBO... Planned format is talks in the morning, working groups in the afternoon. Suggested names for other organizers and participants: Finkbeiner, Drain, Fraisse, Dickinson, Banday, Oliveira-Costa, Wandalt, T. Jones, Peloso. Volunteers from the telecon: Kogut <-> foregrounds, Lawrence <-> Beyond Fisher, Gibbs sampling foreground modeling, Krauss <-> Other inflation models. B. Systematics/Analysis/Template Missions Meeting date still being worked. Aug 8 works in the Belmont Conference Center. Other venues being checked for dates at the end of July. Topics: Systematics, Analysis, Scan Strategy. Other suggestions: Frequency Coverage Other suggestions included making sure we test against template missions. We should also make sure we do not appear to be locked into a small number of mission ideas. C. Technology Meeting date fixed at Aug 25 - 29. At NIST Colorado. Schedule. Jan 15: Assemble list of candidate contributors. Feb 1: 1st list of speakers Mar 1: Detailed Workshop planning. SubTopics: Optics, Polarization Modulators, Amplifier Focalplanes, Bolometer Focalplanes, Coolers Yet to figure out: A system of relative merits of technology: Figure of Merit. Written reports beforehand stating: Technology type, TRL, Cost, Benefits. 4. Aspen Workshop: see 3 slides from Hanany on http://cmbpol.uchicago.edu site. Hanany will introduce goals of mission concept study and invite contributions. He needs a short paragraph on the definitions of each detailed study and the goals of each workshop. He will also give an outline describing the activities in CMBPol - PPPDT, Mission Study, BEPAC, Decadal Survey. 5. Other workshops this summer. International Cryocoolers - Long Beach CA, June 9-12, SPIE Telescopes and instrumentation June 23-28 Marseille, Applied Superconductivity August 17-22, Chicago. OTHERS? 6. Should we plan a CMBPol meeting in 2009 associated with the publication of our report? It should be linked to the publication of the report. It should be much broader than the report, CMBPol Science. UMinn has been thinking about a repeat of their 2006 meeting. Chicago is thinking about such a meeting. No dissention was heard. Its probably a good thing to plan on. Hanany and Meyer will coordinate. Any others interested in the early thinking should contact us.
